Evan Peterson - Purdue IT/Video Express Project
This project was conducted in collaboration with UX professionals at Purdue IT and focuses on enhancing both the Content Creator and Administrative experiences for the Video Express service, a self-recording studio open to Purdue students, faculty, and staff. It introduces three new features to improve background selection and creation:
In addition, the project introduces a new administrative interface for approving content creators’ backgrounds and monitoring the Community page.
In order to achieve the maximum amount of focus on each activity we set up we often split into smaller groups to create a more concise and focused outcome. This included secondary research where I focused on finding sources related to our user stories along with a couple of other teammates, while other teammates created a comparative analysis as their form of secondary research. I covered topics such as AI in the video recording industry as well as experiences in self recording studios. These smaller groups allowed us to communicate more quickly and effectively while understanding our peers goals.
Doing interviews in groups of two or three allowed us to take turns in roles such as Interviewer, Note Taker, and Usability Tester. Taking my turn in these roles allowed me to gain valuable experience with different aspects of the process and for us to give each other tips on aspects that others may not be as well versed in.
I gained project management experience through the previously mentioned interviews. I conducted multiple of the interviews set up allowing me to develop my skills as a leader and be more social. Managing these interviews was very hands-on and was a good exercise in project management. Project management skills were also developed with how I conducted myself within my specific groups. I took initiative and made good initial progress when starting our admin designs and was very involved with the entire creation of the admin screens. On top of this I also led a few different sponsor meetings as well as took notes for nearly every meeting.
I am specializing in the design aspect of UX/UI and that was very prominent in all of my work this semester as I was very involved with the development of the administrator screens as well as some early iterations of screens on the tablet. This semester did however awaken an interest in research in me. We conducted many interviews over the course of the semester and it was very interesting and fun to learn the proper way to go about things as well as how this research and the findings should be communicated in the end results. These specializations allow me to really hone in on the things that I’m interested in and market myself in regards to those specializations as I gain more experience.
Final presentations were another great opportunity for professional communication and I believe that ours went very well. I focused on sharing our problem scope as well as talking a bit about the planning stages for moving into the administrator screens.
